What do I do in a Zoom coaching gym if my partner becomes unavailable and leaves the breakout room?

In the rare case that your partner becomes unavailable or leaves the breakout room during a Zoom coaching gym session, here are some steps to troubleshoot the situation and ensure you make the most of your session.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

1. Leave the Breakout Room

  • To get assistance, click the “Leave Breakout Room” button (important note: do not click 'Leave meeting' as this will remove you entirely from the Zoom room). This will bring you back to the main session where the Lab Technician or facilitator can assist you. You can find this button on the left of the Toolbar at the bottom of your Zoom window.

2.  Request help

  • When in a Breakout room, if you need assistance, click the "Ask for Help' button as shown below (3rd button in from the right)
  • Then you will see this message:
  • Click 'Invite Host' and one of the coaches will come in to assist you.

2. Communicate with the Lab Technician (when in the main Zoom room)

  • Option 1: Raise Your Hand
    • Use the Raise Hand feature (usually found in the bottom toolbar) to alert the Lab Technician. They will check in with you and help resolve the issue.
  • Option 2: Send a Message in Zoom Chat
    • Send a message directly to the Lab Technician to let them know about the situation. Select their name from the dropdown in the chat window to ensure your message goes directly to them. They may be able to add you to another group.

3. Stay in the Main Room until the Lab Technician assists you

  • Please wait in the main session until the Lab Technician assigns you to a new partner or provides further guidance.

What You Can’t Do in Breakout Rooms

  • Zoom’s breakout room feature does not allow participants to message others who are not in the same breakout room. This is why it’s best to leave the room or raise your hand for assistance.
